Urgent Care Stories: Pan’s Close Call

At VetExpress Animal Urgent Care, we’re committed to providing immediate treatment for pets facing emergencies. And sometimes, that commitment can turn tragic circumstances into stories of hope. That’s certainly the case when it comes to Pan, a small dog with a big problem: a life-threatening wound to her neck. Below, we’re sharing Pan’s story and the steps we took to save her life. If you need to deal with an urgent care scenario somewhere down the line, we hope it helps!

Rapid Response

Pan’s owner was frantically calling around because his dog had been bitten in a near-fatal fashion by a German Shepherd. He was rejected multiple times because the vets he called were “appointment only” or “didn’t do surgery,” he lucked out when his wife was able to contact the team at VetExpress. Even though we were 35 minutes away, we were willing to open our clinic early and have nurses ready to greet the patient.

Pan and her owner arrived at our clinic in a state of distress. Both were covered in blood, a clear indication of the severity of the situation. The wound, upon initial assessment, was extensive and gruesome, exposing vital organs. This presented an immediate life-threatening risk.

Surgical Intervention

Our veterinary team quickly triaged Pan, prioritizing stabilization and immediate surgical intervention. The extent of her wound required expert surgical repair to close the wound and protect the exposed organs.

  • Immediate Action: The team’s swift response was crucial in controlling the bleeding and preventing further complications.
  • Surgical Expertise: The surgical team skillfully repaired the wound, meticulously addressing the damaged tissues.
  • Same-Day Discharge: Thanks to the intervention’s efficiency and effectiveness, Pan was able to return home the same day, avoiding prolonged hospitalization!

Post-Operative Care and a Full Recovery

Post-operative care is just as important as the surgery itself. Pan’s owner was provided with detailed instructions for home care, including medication administration and wound management.

  • Drain Removal: A follow-up appointment was scheduled for drain removal, a standard procedure in cases of significant tissue trauma.
  • Wound Healing: At the drain removal appointment, the wound was assessed and showed excellent healing progress.
  • Suture Removal: Pan is scheduled for suture removal next week, marking another milestone in her recovery.

Pan is doing exceptionally well, but it was a close call, and without her owner’s quick thinking or our availability, this story might have had a much darker ending.

Her case is a testament to the importance of rapid response, skilled veterinary care, and dedicated owner compliance. From the moment she arrived at our clinic, our team was focused on providing the best possible treatment, leading to a successful outcome.

We’re thrilled to see Pan recovering so well and back to her normal, happy self!
